Why Culture is Important for Organisations and Teams

Your organisational, business or team culture is more than simply what you do or what you offer. It encompasses the way that you do it. It influences how you are seen and perceived to be by consumers. It also influences how people experience your organisation/business/team and your leadership. Your culture is what consumers see and what they judge and what team members experience. Think Apple, Facebook and The Trump Organisation. Your workplace culture in essence is ‘the way we do things around here’.

For example your culture impacts on how your team feels and how they express their emotions, how they behave, how productive they are, how engaged they are and your level of staff satisfaction and turnover. Ultimately it impacts on their level of wellbeing (Seligman, 2011, Rath and Hartner, 2010)

Although it is not possible to create or force a culture, it is well known that the leader of a team, a business or an organisation strongly influences it (Schein, 2010) and this can occur with intention, or organically. Given the importance of workplace culture, influencing it with intention is a good idea.

A good place to start is by reviewing your organisations Vision, Mission and Values. Ask yourself:

  • What does the Vision and Mission say about our organisation and and does it match how we are likely to be perceived?
  • Do the Values reflect what is important about and to the organisation. What message do they send?
  • How are your values ‘lived’ and experienced. What kinds of behavours do you expect in relation to them and what behaviours are actually happening?

If you have trouble answering these questions or you find yourself dissatisfied with your answers, then you may need to spend some time further considering your organisational or team culture.
