10 Tips for Creating Sustainable Change

There are a few things we can do to help ourselves and  others to create and sustain the changes we want to make.  Whether it’s a new habit, a new belief or a new strategy, by taking the following steps you are more likely to get there and stay there.

  1. Know where you are going, know what you want. If you don’t know your destination then any road will do. Be clear about what you want.
  2. Know when you want it. Now?  In three weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months? It makes a difference to how you get there. If you have no timeframe, you have no motivation for taking action.
  3. Know why you want it. Having a compelling reason makes it more likely you will get there. Ask yourself…for what purpose do I want this? Find your why.
  4. Understand what it will cost you if you don’t do it? Go forward in time 1 year, 5 years and look back as someone who hasn’t done it. Where are you? How does it feel?
  5. Ask yourself what you need to believe about yourself to do it.
  6. Ask yourself what help you need and who can help you to do it and then ask for the help you need.
  7. How likely are you to do it now? Score yourself out of 10, with 10 being certain to do it. If you score less than a seven, ask yourself what do you need to do or believe that will get you up to an 8 or 9.
  8. Now tell people about it – there’s no going back now!
  9. So go forward in your mind to a time in the future beyond when you want to have done it by. Now it’s public knowledge, you can imagine how you feel with it done can’t you? Really feel how wonderful it is, imagine what you see, what you hear, where you are, how you look, what you are saying to yourself. Now do this two more times, each time further ahead in the future.
  10. Take an action every day towards either your goal or to maintain your change, no matter how small.

And remember – a new habit takes 3 weeks to create and it’s yours!
