5 Tips to Transition from work to Home Mindset

Have you ever found it difficult to switch from work mode to home mode? Knowing you want to pay attention to your partner, your kids, your hobbies but finding it difficult to move your mind from focusing on work to focusing on home? especially at this time of year with so many things to finish before the holidays!

There might be lots going on – lots to think about, to do, to remember… you might have had a frustrating day, perhaps you had a difficult conversation or interaction and are still feeling the emotions from it… There are many things that can contribute to this problem.

So how can you make the switch in your mind, your attention and your mood to be focused on family, friends, partner? Consider the suggestions below. If one doesn’t work for you, try a different one.

  1. Get a meditation or relaxation app on your phone and find a place to listen to it for 5 or 10 minutes before walking in the door – parking a block away and sitting in the car works well for this. Try it on the train or a park bench.
  2. Take a 15 minute walk upon leaving work or before entering home – your body and health will thank you for it too.
  3. Work out what music makes you feel REALLY good and listen to it on the way home or during your walk.
  4. Take 5 slow deep breaths, making sure that you expand your stomach every time you breathe in (this one is good to do at work during the day too).
  5. Spend a few minutes at the end of every work day thinking about what you are truly grateful for and create a journal to write down your thoughts.
